Function of Car Fuel Pump
In general, the fuel pump in vehicles and motorcycles serves only one purpose, which is to pump fuel from the tank. Pumping will cause the fuel in the tank to flow into the combustion chamber. The fuel is then transformed into energy that is used to start the engine of the car. However, depending on the kind of vehicle, its capabilities can be increased.
The purpose of the gasoline pump is split into two categories in the automobile industry dependent on the kind of vehicle. The fuel pump moves fuel from the tank to the injector in a car with an injection system. On a vehicle with a carburetor system, however, it pumps fuel from the tank to the carburetor.
Types of Fuel Pump
There are two basic types of fuel pumps. The types are described in further detail below based on how their individual parts function.
Mechanical Fuel Pump
Mechanical fuel pumps are the first form of fuel pump. On a diesel engine, the engine speed connected to the belt acts as the driving force for the mechanical fuel pump. This component is moved by the camshaft mechanism found on the cylinder head in other automobile engines.
Electric Fuel Pump
Electric fuel pumps are the second variety of fuel pump. There is also this kind of gasoline pump, which is powered by an electric motor that is connected to the driving motor. The two variants of this component type are the model that employs a platinum diaphragm and the standard model typically seen in cars with an injection system.
