Fuel pump electrical problems

The gas is frequently blamed when an engine runs poorly or not at all. Either a defective fuel pump or “poor gas” is the issue.

This strategy is incorrect. Sometimes what seems to be a fuel issue is actually an electrical issue, either with the fuel pump supply or the ignition system. Here are some pointers for identifying such issues:

Is there a spark?

A spark plug lead should be connected to an inline spark plug tester. You can tell the ignition system is producing voltage if there is a spark. However, keep in mind that some defects, such as a condenser becoming faulty, might only manifest itself when the engine is working hard.

Is it the correct time?

This is simple to verify on an older engine with a distributor system. Simply verify the advance by aiming a timing lamp at the mark on the crank pulley and activating it with the inductive pickup attached to the number 1 spark plug wire. At idle, it usually hovers about 12°.

Engine timing cannot be changed on modern automobiles with computer-controlled ignition. However, the Check Engine light can illuminate if the problem persists.

The gasoline pump is it on?

The electric fuel pump for modern fuel-injected engines is often located in the gas tank. When you initially turn the key on a car or truck that has been sitting for some time, you’ll frequently hear the pump run.

In the event of a collision, a fuel delivery system in Fords has an inertia switch that shuts off the fuel flow. Check this first though; a relatively small bump can make it work.

Once the cutout switch has been ruled out, examine if the fuel pump is drawing electricity. The fuel pump fuse or relay should be checked next if there is no current.

Is fuel getting to the engine?

You can observe if fuel is being squirted in on a carbureted engine. Just take the air filter off, then quickly blip the throttle. With a fuel injection system, it’s harder. You must attach a gauge to the fuel rail

Check to see if you’re receiving enough pressure using the fitting that the majority of manufacturers give. To find out the permissible range, you’ll probably need the owner’s manual for the car.

Check to see whether the fuel filter is clogged if there is no fuel or the pressure is too low. Locate it, remove it, and clean it.
