How to Clean Cloudy Headlights

Your car’s headlights are more than just aesthetic features; they’re vital for your safety on the road. Over time, however, car headlights can become cloudy or yellowed due to exposure to rain, UV rays, dirt, and other environmental factors. Cloudy headlights not only diminish the appearance of your vehicle but also reduce visibility, potentially compromising safety. Step 1: Assess the Condition

For moderately cloudy headlights, sanding is often the most effective method to remove the outer layer of oxidation. Begin by wetting the headlight surface and the sandpaper. Use progressively finer grits of sandpaper, starting with a lower grit (around 600) and gradually moving up to a higher grit (1200 or 2000). Sand in a back-and-forth motion, ensuring even coverage and paying particular attention to areas with heavy oxidation.

Step 5: Polishing

After sanding, apply a small amount of headlight polishing compound to a clean microfiber towel. Rub the compound onto the headlight surface using circular motions, working in small sections at a time. Continue polishing until the headlight becomes clear and glossy, adding more headlight polishing compound as needed.

Step 6: Final Clean

Once the headlights are well polished, use a clean microfiber towel to wipe away any remaining residue. Follow up with rubbing alcohol to remove any remaining contaminants and ensure a clean surface for the next step.
