How to Reduce Fuel Consumption

Here are some suggestions for how to drive, what to put in your car, and maintenance issues that will help you obtain the most mileage per dollar spent on fuel.

  1. Driving only when necessary. Driving your car less is the most effective approach to cut your fuel usage. Drive your car only when absolutely necessary. Consider riding a bike or walking if you only need to travel a few blocks. You’ll not only spend less money at the gas pump, but getting active will do you good, too. Is driving always required? Consider combining your travels.
  2. Do not idle. When you do have to drive, make sure to keep the engine running as little as possible. Your automobile is effectively getting 0 miles per gallon when it is running but not moving. Therefore, if it is safe to do so, turn off the engine if your automobile will be stationary for longer than a minute or so.
  3. Keep your speed (and braking) steady. Always press down steadily and consistently on the accelerator pedal of your car while driving. A heavy foot will always result in poor fuel economy and decreased gas mileage. drive a car with a turbo? To prevent the turbo from activating unnecessarily, try getting a better feel for the situation.
  4. Observe your speed. Try to maintain a speed that is inside the limit. Every make and model of vehicle has a different ideal speed range. However, your gas mileage and fuel consumption will decrease as you drive faster. Drive as fast as you need to in order to maintain a safe driving speed.
  5. When possible, coast. Continuously braking and accelerating just consumes fuel and lowers your car’s fuel efficiency. Therefore, coast whenever you can to prevent wasting petrol. This requires some skill but can be a wonderful strategy to improve your car’s fuel efficiency.
  6. On the highway, use the cruise control. By using cruise control, your car will maintain a consistent speed. By managing your acceleration, you can make your engine work less while consuming less gas. Use the cruise control to conserve on gas if it’s safe to do so given the road conditions.
  7. Reduce the drag on your vehicle. When not required, do you use a roof box or freight carrier to travel about town or on the freeway? You are undoubtedly reducing your fuel economy numbers by causing unneeded drag. The aerodynamics of your car may be significantly impacted by these additions.
  8. Close all of the windows. Driving with the windows down increases wind resistance and drag on your vehicle. Generally speaking, keeping the windows down while driving is acceptable as long as you’re not going over 35 mph. However, if you’re traveling at greater speeds, you should keep the windows open to reduce drag and maximize fuel efficiency.
  9. Reduce the use of air conditioning. Of course, there will be occasions when the summer heat forces you to turn on the air conditioner. However, when it’s feasible, think about using the AC sparingly. Alternately, you might get ventilation by using the usual fan settings on your car to stay comfortable.
  10. Replace dirty air filters. Dirty air filters force your engine to work much harder than it has to, resulting in worse fuel economy. So, make sure you follow the manufacturer’s recommendation for periodically changing out the air filter. A clean air filter allows your engine to perform more efficiently and also helps you save
  11. Maintain proper tire inflation. Always make sure your tires are inflated to the recommended air pressure level by consulting your car’s owner’s manual. In some situations, having improperly inflated tires can result in a 5% decrease in fuel efficiency. Unsure of the proper pressure to apply? Instead of looking at the PSI number on the sidewall of your tire, check the plate that is stamped on the driver’s side doorjamb. If you’re a paying customer at your neighborhood gas station, you can probably use the air pump there. Before doing so, you might want to consider getting a cheap pressure gauge.
  12. Lighten the load within the car. Remove anything unneeded from the trunk or other parts of your car. Your car’s fuel economy drops by around one or two percent for every 100 pounds of weight in the vehicle. You may reduce your vehicle’s fuel usage and lower your gasoline costs by keeping your vehicle as light as feasible.
