Autos with lower trim levels and older models sometimes offer manual mirror adjustment. The simplest technique is to manually use a cable toggle switch or to modify the mirror glass directly on the mirror assembly. Although they are not entirely extinct, manual mirrors are becoming very rare.
Almost all modern cars come with power mirror adjustment. A power mirror system functions as follows:
♦Motors for power adjusting side mirrors
♦Switch that controls the direction of a mirror
♦Power mirror fused circuit
The entire system won’t function if even one component is broken.
How does the mirror control switch work?
The power mirror switch only operates the side mirrors. The internal rearview mirror can only be adjusted manually. There are three settings for the power mirror switch: left, off, and right. If the button is pressed with the switch in the center, neither mirror will move. This prevents the mirrors from moving in the event that the directional control button is unintentionally pressed. The mirror motor may travel in four directions using the directional control button: up, down, right, and left. The side mirror motor circuit is energized at the switch if the switch is moved to either the left or right side. The mirror motor inside the mirror housing will swivel the mirror glass in the direction you choose when you click the directional control button on the switch. The mirror halts its movement when the button is released.
In order to protect the mirror glass, the mirror motor can only move a certain distance. The motor will click and bind when the travel limit is reached until the directional control button is released. When the button is pressed past its breaking point, the mirror motor ultimately burns out and stops working, requiring replacement. Driving safely requires that you make sure your mirrors are adjusted for optimum side and rear visibility.
